With the warm weather we’ve been having, 2020 is shaping up to be a bumper crop of baby squirrels, bunnies, foxes, raccoons, birds, waterfowl and even mice! We will need all the help we can get to insure that calls are answered quickly, referrals are made and wildlife is moved out of the vet offices within 24 hours. Now is the perfect time to learn what’s involved in working the helpline or transporting wildlife.

Helpline and transport volunteers play a vital role in aiding our rehabilitators, our veterinarians and the public to provide the best options available for injured, orphaned and abandoned wildlife.

Helpline volunteers return calls to the public; giving advice and providing resources and referrals. They also contact area veterinarians to determine what wildlife is being held and treated. Finally, they contact rehabilitators for placement of wildlife. The helpline is open 9-5 seven days a week. Shifts are two hours at a time with a minimum requirement of three shifts/month.

Wildlife transporters pick up wildlife from area veterinarians and shelters and deliver it to rehabilitators. All wildlife is contained when picked up and transporters are provided contact information and addresses for rehabilitator destinations. Transporters sign up for specific dates with a minimum of two dates/month. During the busy season-May through October, we try to have two transporters per day.
