Volunteer Spotlight – Shari May

Shari May has been volunteering with WRL since October 2019, working behind the scenes as an administrative volunteer managing the Donor Perfect and Constant Contact databases while also helping Linda enter volunteer information into WRL’s systems. She also previously served on both the Fundraising and Volunteer Management committees.

Her path to WRL began after a month in South Africa, where she volunteered on two game reserves monitoring African wild dogs, elephants, rhinos, and lions. Returning home from that incredible experience, she knew she wanted to keep working for a wildlife-focused nonprofit and found WRL through an information session at Long Branch Nature Center. Years into her volunteer work, she got to see WRL’s helpline in action firsthand when she found an injured squirrel hiding under a car in her condo complex. Within minutes of leaving a voicemail, a helpliner called back, and within five more minutes had instructions ready to get the squirrel to VCA on Duke Street in Alexandria. The speed and professionalism of the response left a real impression on her, and it deepened her appreciation for the dedicated, compassionate people who make WRL work.

Outside of her day job at a Washington, D.C.-based think tank, Shari works as unpaid staff to three cats and keeps a never-ending list of books to read.

Wildlife Rescue League offers thanks to the dedicated volunteers who give their time, energy, and hearts to helping injured and orphaned wildlife. The spotlight will feature exceptional individuals whose diverse skills and unwavering commitment exemplify the spirit of WRL.
